Description

Bright View is a three-bay, two-storey gabled dwelling of developed vernacular direct entry plan form, dating from likely pre-1834 origin, with probable construction in the 1760s-1770s. The house is situated on the south-west side of King Street, Newcastle, on the slope of the Mournes. It represents one of the very few pre-1830 buildings in Newcastle whose façade and interior remain largely intact.

The front north-east façade is almost symmetrical, as is typical of the developed vernacular plan form. At ground level, slightly off centre, is a narrow timber-sheeted folding door with an elliptical fanlight featuring petal tracery. To the left of the doorway is a sash window with 6 over 6 Georgian panes; to the right is a similar window. The first floor contains three comparable but smaller windows with 6 panes over 3. A low rendered wall extends from both ends of the façade, enclosing a small front garden now largely obscured by foliage. A stone stairway pathway runs alongside the gable, providing access to the higher garden, which is now overgrown. The rear of the house is accessed by stone steps descending into a small yard against the rocky outcrop beyond.

The rear elevation features six cast iron lattice pane windows throughout and a rudimentary lean-to porch sheltering the back door. Small projections of slate provide runoff from windows, with a curious recess above the ground floor window. The external walls are beautifully whitewashed, with remnants of yellow ochre wash still visible. The front façade and gables are finished in rough cast lime render, largely limewashed. The roof is covered in natural slate with two rendered chimney stacks of varied pots. Cast iron rainwater goods are present throughout. Both interior and exterior are limewashed.

The property is shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, possibly corresponding to a two-storey dwelling belonging to Mary Macken recorded in the 1834 valuation—notable as most King Street dwellings at that date were single storey. The 1863 valuation indicates the building was then under extension, suggesting the roof may have been raised later. Local tradition dates the house to 1760-1770 and associates it with Mr King, a builder and surveyor with the Annesley estate. Some local residents believe it to be approximately 200 years old, while local researcher Bernard Davey suggests King Street itself may be named after Mr King who lived at number 63. Alternative local sources attribute the house to Sean McAree, with King Street being an anglicised version of his name.

The rear garden holds significant historical importance as it was used by Catholic worshippers prior to the construction of St Mary's Church. The stone pathway running up to King Street, known as the Mass Pad, led to this house and the Mass rock located in the back garden. The name Penny Lane is also associated with the pathway, possibly referring to the practice of worshippers giving a penny offering to the priest. A commemorative plaque marking 'Places that time forgot' has been erected by Newcastle Chamber of Commerce at this location, recognising its significance as one of the oldest houses in the harbour area.
