Description
A single-storey hipped roof house set on a slight rise at the north end of King Street, south of Newcastle town centre. Originally built around 1836 by architect Thomas Duff as a gate lodge to Earl Annesley's Donard estate, it has been greatly enlarged and altered since around 1993.
The original section forms the eastern part of what is now a roughly U-shaped building. The east façade of this original portion is built in granite and is symmetrical, with a central doorway flanked by a window on either side. Between the door and windows are simple granite pilasters, with raised quoins at the angles. This doorway is no longer in use as the main entrance and now has PVC French doors and windows. The short north façade is largely rendered with a single central window. The south façade similarly merges into the modern extension.
A large L-shaped extension, wholly rendered, was added around 1993 and fundamentally altered the building's form. The main entrance has been relocated to the north-facing valley of the U-shaped plan. The roof is hipped and covered in natural slate. A tall granite chimney stack with octagonal granite pots survives from the original building, though it does not appear to be in its original position. PVC rainwater goods have been installed throughout.
According to Thomas Duff's original plans, preserved at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, the lodge was initially intended to be grander, with an entrance portico, but what was eventually built was considerably plainer. The building retained its original rectangular form, with a small rear return, until the recent major extension. Donard Lodge itself, the principal residence it served, was demolished in 1966.
