Daisy Hill Hospital, Hospital Rd, Newry, Co Down

This is a Nissen hut, built between 1940 and 1959, and originally designed as a quick and temporary solution to provide accommodation using minimal materials, responding to national production priorities during the Second World War. It is located immediately south-east of the administration block at Daisy Hill Hospital, Newry.

The building is a single unit with a curved steel frame, sheeted with corrugated metal, and resting on a concrete base. The south-west facing road elevation features plain plywood-sheeted access doors on the left and in the middle, with a modern brick pier flanking the left-hand door. Six timber window units are arranged along this facade; most are top-opening, and all have timber cills. Small monopitched corrugated metal roofs cover the doors and windows. The left and right gables are felt covered and each contains three sets of timber windows. The rear elevation includes double-leaf doors at each end, with windows between them, similar to those on the front facade. A covered passage connects the building at its middle right to a flat-roofed modern building at the rear. Water pipes feed into the building to the left of this passage, originating from a tall brick water tank. All the windows are in poor condition. The building was formerly and currently used as an office and is earmarked for demolition by the hospital authorities.
