Description

The railway station, built between 1840 and 1859, originally served as the terminus of the Newry & Enniskillen Railway Company’s line from Goraghwood. It was intended to connect to Enniskillen, but the line was only extended to Armagh. From 1861, the station handled trains to Warrenpoint and, from 1885, electric trams to Bessbrook, with a separate terminus located on Upper Edward Street. The Great Northern Railway Co took over operations in 1879. The station complex included a locomotive shed, goods shed, and turntable. Railway operations ceased in 1965. A 1969 survey noted derelict buildings including a roofless brick engine shed, and intact station platforms. The former station site has been demolished and is now occupied by Ulsterbus. The remains of the former Newry and Bessbrook electric tramway station adjoined the main station. The site holds industrial archaeological interest.
