Description
The building is a simple, single-storey gabled pumping station constructed around 1900 in squared rubble with cream brick dressings. It was built as part of the Mourne-Belfast water conduit. The pumping station is situated in a hollow to the west of Burren Road, approximately 2 kilometres west of Ballynahinch. It adjoins a house of the same date and style, built as the residence for the employee who maintained the well house.
The south front of the building is symmetrical, featuring a semicircular arch-headed door opening with double timber doors. Above the door is an oculus with timber louvered infill, both featuring brick dressings. A matching oculus is present over a small sash window with two over two glazing on the north face, also with in and out brick dressings. The east and west faces each incorporate a single, off-centre segmental arch-headed window opening with a sash window (two over two glazing) and brick dressings. The external walls are built upon a small projecting plinth with chamfered brick dressings. The roof is covered with natural slate and features plain bargeboards, along with a corbelled brick eaves course. The walls are finished with squared rubble, incorporating in and out brick dressings to windows, and as quoins. Cast iron rainwater goods are present.
The pumping station was constructed in the early 20th century by the Belfast & District Water Commissioners. It appears to have been recently superseded by a more modern adjacent structure. The building holds industrial archaeological interest, and contributes to the group value of the site.
