Ballykine Lodge, 5 Burren Road, Ballykine Upper, Ballynahinch, County Down, BT 24 8LQ

This is a slightly picturesque, one and a half storey gabled house dating from approximately 1900-1901. Constructed of squared rubble with cream brick dressings, it is one of a series of similar dwellings built along the course of the Mourne-Belfast water conduit by the Belfast & District Water Commissioners, intended for those employed in maintaining the nearby pumping station. The property is situated on the west side of Burren Road, roughly 2 kilometres west of Ballynahinch.

The irregular east elevation has a single-storey gabled porch positioned slightly to the left of centre. A segmental arch-headed door opening, with a modern timber door and cream brick dressings, is set into the south face of the porch. To the east face of the porch is a segmental arch-headed window with a two-paned sash window frame, matching dressings, and a stone cill (now painted). The porch gable features brick parapets with sandstone dressings. A similar sash window appears to the right of the porch along the main east facade. The south elevation is gabled with two sash windows on both the ground and first floors, all with the characteristic cream brick dressings. The west facade has one sash window on the far left of the ground floor. The north face is largely hidden by a high stone wall. Access to the enclosed yard was not possible, but two sash windows are visible on the first floor, with the one on the right slightly higher than the other. The roof is covered in natural slate and has plain bargeboards, with a corbelled brick eaves course. The walls are finished with squared rubble and cream brick quoins. A large brick chimney stack, constructed of red brick with cream brick dressings, rises from the midpoint of the ridge. The external walls rest on a small projecting plinth with a chamfered brick dressing. Cast iron rainwater goods are present.

The house served its original purpose as accommodation for water conduit maintenance staff until relatively recently. The development of a new, presumably automated, pumping station appears to have diminished its original function.
