Description

This was a mid-18th century house, likely built between 1760 and 1779, originally comprising three tenaments. It stood on Basin Walk in Newry, County Down, and was demolished to facilitate a new road. The house was recorded in 1969 as being two storeys with attics, featuring hipped slated roofs and harled granite rubble walls finished with a brick eaves cornice. It had double-hung windows with glazing bars. A two-storey, semi-octagonal entrance porch with semi-circular headed windows was a prominent feature. The entrances were characterised by semi-elliptical or segmental arched fanlights and sidelights, also with leading glazing bars. The interior of number 9 was notably well detailed. In the early 19th century, western and eastern wings were sealed off to create numbers 8 and 10, and a rear extension was added along with the porch. The building had a frontage of approximately 40 feet. According to the Ulster Tatler of October 1970, it was known as Basin House and was considered the oldest dwelling in Newry, dating back to 1770. Further details and illustrations can be found in the Archaeological Survey of County Down, page 425, figure 281, and plates 143, 201 and 205.
