Description

Clougher Hall is a single-storey, gabled vernacular farm house built before 1834, now vacant. It is located at the end of a long lane to the south of the Ardglass Road, approximately one and a half miles southeast of Downpatrick. The asymmetrical front facade faces north. A timber-panelled door, with a simple geometrical surround, is situated to the right of centre. To the left of the door are two window openings of differing sizes, also with surrounds similar to the doorway. All window and door openings are currently boarded over. A further window opening is positioned to the right of the doorway. The east and west gables each feature a single window opening. A lean-to structure is located at the rear, to the left of centre, with timber sheeting on its west face and two small window openings. The rear facade has three window openings to the left of the lean-to. The entire facade is finished in unpainted rough cast. The roof is slated, with rendered parapets, and incorporates three rendered chimney stacks. Cast iron rainwater goods are present. A concrete-covered farmyard lies to the rear, along with mainly single-storey, rough cast finished outbuildings.

A building appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834, likely corresponding to the current house. Valuation records from around 1838 indicate that it was of the same dimensions and was probably over thirty years old at that point, belonging to a Mr Richard West. Richard West, possibly the son of the above, is recorded as resident in 1863, but by 1886, ownership had seemingly changed hands. The property appears to have been vacated in the 1970s.
