Description

The building is a single-storey, flat-roofed primary school constructed in 1950-51 by Thomas McLean, with a two-storey addition dating from approximately 1965. It is a modern style building with a rectilinear, organic plan form, comprised of blocks of varying heights. The two-storey addition of similar design is connected to the original structure by a simple, flat-roofed, covered walkway.

The original single-storey section consists of three irregular, connected blocks. The western block is the tallest and houses the assembly hall/gymnasium, flanked by lower-roofed ancillary accommodation such as offices and circulation spaces. The blocks to the west and south are of intermediate height and contain classrooms, connected by circulation areas. The classrooms and circulation spaces are faced with coloured, pre-cast concrete blocks with a rock face finish. The east and north faces of the gymnasium are finished in render, while the west and south faces retain the concrete block finish. Window frames are steel. All roofs are flat with overhanging, plywood-faced eaves. A timber-faced water tank structure is positioned directly above the central circulation area. The two-storey section, roughly cruciform in plan and constructed of reinforced concrete, is located to the north and linked by the covered walkway.

Originally a boys’ primary school, it is now a mixed school.
