Description
4 Stream Street is a small, two-storey terrace house dating from approximately 1800–1820, situated at the northern end of the east side of Stream Street in Downpatrick. It is listed Grade B2 and holds group value with its neighbouring properties.
The building presents an asymmetrical front façade facing west, constructed principally of rubble finished masonry. The ground floor is set at a high level, with the entrance accessed via a raised walkway with simple wrought iron railings and steps to the north (adjacent to No. 2 Stream Street). The main entrance, positioned to the left of the façade, comprises a modern panelled and glazed door set in a cement-lined recess with brick dressings. Historically, this doorway was distinguished by a Greek Revival inspired door case featuring pilasters and a Greek key frieze to the entablature, which has since been removed. To the right of the doorway are two brick-dressed windows on the ground floor with what appear to be sash frames, though they may contain modern hopper openers. Three similar windows, slightly smaller in proportion, light the first floor.
The southern gable is dominated by a large two-storey flat-roofed modern extension with windows to the south and west. To the rear is a substantial two-storey gabled return, with a lower two-storey gabled shed section attached to its gable end. The first floor of the southern face of the return has a window with a modern frame, while the upper gable of the return is blank. The ground floor rear façade of the main house appears largely obscured by a lean-to structure. The north face of the return has a blank first floor.
The front façade and northern face and gable of the return are finished in rubble; the main southern gable and modern extension are rendered. The roof is slated with a Velux window to the front and a cast iron skylight to the return. A rendered chimney stack rises to the south, with cast iron rainwater goods throughout.
Historical records indicate that this property, formerly distinguished by its Neo-Classical doorway, appears on the 1838 valuation plan of Downpatrick and is recorded in the accompanying valuation returns as belonging to Eleanor Anderson. The east side of Stream Street itself was substantially developed by 1729, as shown on contemporary town plans. The large southern extension was added prior to 1975.
The house is situated within the Downpatrick conservation area and is included in the listing with the associated front railings.
