Description
This is a K6 ‘Jubilee’ telephone kiosk located on Drumintee Road, Meigh, Newry, County Armagh, positioned with its back to the north-eastern elevation of Killevy Post Office. It’s a standard red painted cast-iron kiosk with eight glazed margin-paned panels to three sides, including a door on the front (north-eastern) face. All the glazing is currently covered with transparent plastic. The kiosk has a shallow domed roof with a Crown fascia and the word ‘TELEPHONE’ in red letters on a white background displayed on all four sides. The rear (south-western) panel is plain. Modern telephone fittings are present inside and are not considered of particular interest.
Approximately 45,000 of these kiosks were installed across Britain by the mid-1950s. The K6 design, introduced in 1936, is a variant of the K2 kiosk designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. The last of the K6 kiosks were installed in the early 1950s. After 1955, a fascia at the top was added to accommodate a royal crown. Following the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, two crowns were produced, representing St. Edward's Crown for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the Queen’s Crown of Scotland, to acknowledge her status as Queen Elizabeth I of Scotland. Originally painted Post Office red (BS381C-red538), the kiosk was later painted Poppy red (BS381C-red539) following the introduction of the K8 kiosks. This kiosk was constructed between 1940 and 1959.
