Description

Maryvale is an early 19th-century two-storey farmhouse of three bays, set in mature grounds on the north side of Carnacally Road with a farmyard to the rear. The property is entered via a highly decorative sweeping gate screen and gates.

The house has been much altered. Its original hipped natural slate roof has been removed and replaced with a modern monopitch corrugated metal roof, and the wall head has been truncated. The walls are lined with render and boxed quoins to the front elevation only. The right bay is wider than the other two bays. The front elevation faces south and retains large openings where the original bay windows and central porch once stood. The central opening is a semi-elliptical headed archway, which originally linked the porch to the house. The four first-floor openings have been truncated and infilled. The left gable is blank and abutted by a modern lean-to. The rear elevation is much altered, with a window to the left bay and one to the central bay, and doorways to both the central and right bays. All first-floor windows on the rear are infilled. The right gable is blank and abutted by an outbuilding. To the rear is a farmyard of much altered outbuildings.

Documentary evidence from the 1834 and 1859 Ordnance Survey six-inch maps confirms the property name as Maryvale. The 1862 Valuation describes it as occupied by Olivia Gordon, measuring 22 feet by 12 feet across two storeys. The associated outhouses included a barn measuring 16 feet by 7 feet and a stable measuring 23 feet by 6 feet, both two storeys high. George Gordon of Maryvale married May Alice Corry, of the prominent Newry Corry family, on 9 January 1878. Both Mr. Gordon (died 1916) and Mrs. Gordon (died 1906) are buried in the private graveyard at Coalpit Road. Their eldest son Sydney George Gordon (died 1939) and his wife Muriel (died 1963) subsequently occupied the house and are also buried at Coalpit Road.

Photographs from the 1950s, prior to the property's conversion to an outbuilding in the mid-1970s, show the original form: ground-floor canted bay windows with margin-paned 6/6 sashes to the front and similar 4/4 sashes to the cheeks, all under shallow slate roofs; a box porch to the central bay with flat roof enclosed by an iron balustrade, rendered walls, moulded cornice, a 3x5 paned fixed window to its front face, and a door to its left cheek. Four tripartite first-floor windows had stone cills and granite blockwork surrounds, with three containing 6/6 sliding sashes with matching 2/2 sidelights, and the second window from the left containing a French window with matching sidelights. The house retains many of its internal features, including cornices. A survey photograph from April 1977 documents the building with its first-floor windows intact but ground-floor openings already altered as they now appear, and showing the hipped natural slate roof before its removal. The house was converted to an outbuilding in the mid-1970s when a modern bungalow was built on its front lawn.
