Gates at Maryvale, 34 Carnacally Road, Carnacally, Newry, Co Down, BT34 1LS

These attractive gates and screen, dating from the early to mid-19th century, are constructed in a Grecian Revival style and are of fine quality. They serve Maryvale House (listed building HB16/14/008A). The concave screen has a shallow ‘S’ curve to either side of the central gates and is supported at each end by piers, with a central pier carrying a pair of vehicle gates. Each pier sits on a dressed granite plinth and is built of red brickwork. Each face of the piers features a central plastered Gothic recess, swept to match a pyramidal granite cap. A dressed granite plinth, roughly finished to the interior face, runs along the line of the screen and supports a cast-iron railing. The railings have collared vertical bars with Grecian palmette finials; every sixth bar has a claw-foot cushion where it rests on the plinth. The bottom rail features slightly varied palmette castings, and the top rail has a fretted decorative frieze. There are no diagonal braces supporting the rear of the screen. The two matching gates are similarly detailed to the railings, with an additional rail of interlocking cast-iron foliage at ground level.

The gates were probably erected in the mid-1800s, along with a lodge opposite the road (HB16/14/017). They first appeared on the 1859 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map.
