Description

A shed belonging to Kilkeel Fishing Supplies, situated on the south-west quay of Kilkeel Harbour to the east of the town centre.

This is a plain, utilitarian single-storey shop and store with a Belfast Truss roof, constructed in two sections. The larger front section dates from 1935, while the rear section was possibly added a few years later, though this is not certain. The building is notable for containing an unusual form of Belfast Truss with N-shaped bracings.

The front section measures roughly 21 metres by 11 metres, while the rear section measures roughly 15 metres by 13 metres. The curved gabled front (north-east) elevation is rendered in roughcast and features a large central flat-arched vehicle entrance with sliding timber double doors. To the left and right of the doorway are square windows; the left window has a modern timber frame, while the right is boarded up. Above the doorway the date '1935' appears in moulded numerals. Various timber signboards are mounted to the front. The long north-west elevation is rendered and has at least three windows of various sizes along the left-hand side, all with modern timber frames. Much of the right-hand side could not be seen due to the proximity of several large metal containers. The long south-east and rear elevations are obscured from view due to the closeness of neighbouring buildings. The curved roof of the front section is covered in corrugated metal, as is the curved roof of the rear section.

The building was used as an army cook house during the Second World War. It was surveyed as part of the Belfast Roof Truss survey and is of industrial archaeological interest.
