Site of former 46-48 Irish Street, Downpatrick, Co Down, BT30 6BP

This site on the sloping east side of Irish Street in Downpatrick formerly held a pair of three-storey terraced houses of probable mid 18th-century construction, demolished around 1991 and replaced with new dwellings.

According to a survey conducted in March 1976, the buildings comprised a three-storey block of two houses with a slated roof and rendered chimneys. The walls were rendered, lined, and painted blue and brown, with bevel quoins. The south-west facing elevation featured four drop-hung windows on the second floor and four on the first floor. At ground level, the lower house (No. 46) had a drop-hung window with horizontal astragals and a doorway with a sheeted door and decorative fanlight. The adjacent house (No. 48) had the same arrangement, though with a plain fanlight. Steps led to both doorways. The front elevation measured approximately 22 feet. The building survey noted the condition was poor at that time.

The front elevation's character suggests construction in the mid 18th century, probably around the 1750s–60s. The site appears on a town plan dated 1708 and on all subsequent plans thereafter. Valuation records from 1838 indicate the properties were then occupied by Robert Gregory and Edward Smith.

The buildings were demolished around 1991, and neo-Georgian dwellings have since been constructed on the site. The site is located within a conservation area.
