Description

These lime kilns represent a substantial and well-preserved example of industrial archaeology. Constructed between 1820 and 1839, they are easily viewed from a public road and appear on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832. The kilns are a large stone structure built into the side of a steep hill, facing north-east, and laid out on a rectangular plan. The walls are of basalt and white limestone rubble, with segmental brick arches marking three recessed stages to the kiln openings. Splayed reveals are present around the main kiln recesses. An innermost opening features a rusted iron beam with brick spandrels above. Rusted metal railings are located on the parapet, and the top of the structure is overgrown with grass. Both charging holes are brick-lined and remain open; an area at the top is fenced off. The kilns stand in the garden of a house in a rural location on the edge of the village, set back a short distance from the main road and visible through the house’s main gateway, with a backdrop of a rough grassy hillside and mature trees. The kilns are of industrial archaeological interest and were noted as derelict.
