Description
Killylane Bridge is a single-arch masonry bridge built between 1840 and 1859, carrying the Larne Road over a stream in a rural setting within an open, hilly landscape. It is likely attributable to Charles Lanyon, who served as County Surveyor of Antrim from 1836 to 1860. The bridge is constructed of snecked basalt, with rusticated greystone voussoirs forming the segmental arch. A projecting platband runs at an intermediate level between the arch and the parapet, continuing as raking copings to angled abutments. The abutments and parapets are broken forward at each end to create piers with battered faces, and have humped copings of greystone with feathered extensions over the end piers. Later iron tie bars, now rusted, were added across the top of the arch on each side for strengthening. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest, although its appearance has been affected by later alterations. It appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1857.
