Description

This is a cast iron water pump, likely dating from between 1900 and 1919, situated at 9 The Village, Ballyeaston, County Antrim. The pump remains in its original position, having been erected to supply water to the house and representing a rare survival directly linked to a time when obtaining drinking water involved considerable effort. It is a closed-head lever-type pump with a plain column and cap. The pump is inscribed with a flag logo, identifying its manufacture by Lee Howl & Co. of Tipton, England, along with the words 'Made in England' and the measurement "3"". It is a paragon cistern pump, mounted on the wall beside the back door of the property. The pump is not depicted on either the 1902 or 1921 Ordnance Survey maps, a possible omission due to its domestic use and lack of prominence. Further details are provided in the Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) report 'Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey' by Fred Hammond, dated January 1997, under Pump no. 50. The pump is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest, exhibiting notable style and ornamentation and possessing rarity, social, cultural, and economic significance.
