Description
This is a two-bay, two-storey end-terrace house, part of a terrace of three built in the 1840s on the east side of Islandmagee Road. The terrace occupies a prominent site and contributes to a well-preserved group of buildings with architectural merit. The house has an L-shaped plan, with a projecting gabled bay to the northwest. It is built with natural slate roofs, and features a red brick chimney with original clay pots on the party wall and gable. The exterior walls are smooth, painted render.
The main west-facing elevation has a full-height gabled bay to the left, containing a vertically sheeted timber door with a transom light, and single 2/1 sliding sash windows to the north and south. A single window is located on the first floor. The bay to the right has single windows on each floor. The north elevation abuts a neighboring building. The east elevation has a central half-and-half vertically sheeted timber door, flanked to the left by a single window, and two windows on the first floor (the rightmost window is a 2/1 sliding sash). The south gable has a single window on the first floor to the left.
The house is set within gardens to the south and west, with an enclosed yard to the east. The western boundary is formed by harled rubble walling supporting square gate pillars, which have been repaired with brick, and accessed through a single timber gate. Cast-iron half-round gutters and round downpipes are present.
The building first appeared on the Ordnance Survey map of 1857. Griffith’s Valuation of 1859 valued the property at £1, occupied by Eliza Pinkerton, under the ownership of William English. Subsequent Valuation Revisions indicate changes in occupancy and ownership over the years. In 1908, the property was recorded as vacant. The listing includes the house and its front walling.
