Lime Kilns at +, South of St John's C of I Church, Islandmagee, Larne, Co Antrim

The lime kilns, located south of St John's Church of Ireland Church in the townland of Ballyharry, Islandmagee, near Larne, County Antrim, represent a common type of industrial structure, though now typically derelict. Constructed between 1840 and 1859, the kilns are built from limestone and basalt rubble, forming a rectangular plan. The west face features two kiln openings, each framed by two sets of recessed segmental arches. The structure is overgrown and currently used as a car dump. Situated in a rural location, the kilns are visible from the main road but accessed via a lane, overlooking Larne Lough. A lime kiln is depicted on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832, while the rectangular walling appears on a map of 1857. The kilns were built for burning white limestone, or chalk, to produce a rough powder for various applications. They are recorded as derelict and of industrial archaeological interest.
