Description

No. 1 Purdysburn Village is an end-of-terrace house of one and a half storeys built around 1830 as part of a group of three similar houses. It stands on a cul-de-sac on the north side of Ballycoan Road in Purdysburn Village, County Down.

The building is constructed of redbrick with a pitched natural slate roof fitted with roll-moulded black clay ridge tiles. A single redbrick chimneystack with terracotta pots sits on the roof, with exposed timber rafter feet visible at the eaves, now supporting replacement plastic rainwater goods.

The front elevation features a ground floor window to the left and a dormer window to the right with timber bargeboard. Window openings are square-headed with chamfered brick surrounds, masonry sills and original timber frames fitted with latticed iron bipartite casement windows—a now rare feature. A square-headed door opening sits to the right of the front elevation, with chamfered brick surround and an original vertically-sheeted timber door.

The east elevation is abutted by the adjoining house No. 2. The rear elevation is partially covered by a catslide roof to the west half and has replacement timber casement windows. The west gable contains a single upper-level window opening with original latticed iron casement windows and a square-headed door opening to the rear projection with a replacement timber glazed door.

Although the interior appears to have been substantially altered, the exterior retains most of its original Victorian fabric and detailing. The house has both historic interest and group value as part of the terrace of three similar estate houses.

The building is documented on the first Ordnance Survey map of 1833, depicted as an oblong structure at the entrance to the cul-de-sac. The Ordnance Survey Memoirs record that Purdysburn Village was established before the 1830s, though no detailed documentary evidence of its origins survives. The three houses formed part of the Purdysburn Estate, becoming private residences after the sale of Purdysburn House around 1860.

Historical occupancy is recorded from Griffith's Valuation of 1861, which lists Jane Gardner as tenant, renting from Robert Batt, a Justice of the Peace for County Down, at a valuation of £1 10 shillings. Gardner occupied the house until 1896, when local grocer John Martin took possession. In 1901, postmistress Mary H. McAlesse became occupant. The house subsequently passed to weaver William Gregg in 1908 and weaver Richard Skates in 1915, who occupied it until at least 1935. Between 1935 and 1957, ownership transferred to John S. Brain, with William Spence recorded as occupant until 1957. During this later period, the house's valuation increased from £1 10 shillings to £4, and measurements recorded it at 14 feet by 16.5 feet.

The rear gardens are set at a lower level than Ballycoan Road, forming part of the village's distinctive setting within the cul-de-sac layout.
