Description
No. 2 Purdysburn Village is a mid-terrace, 1½-storey redbrick former estate cottage built around 1830 as part of a group of three similar houses. It stands on a cul-de-sac on the north side of Ballycoan Road in Purdysburn Village, County Down, with the rear gardens set at a lower level than the road itself.
The building retains much of its original external fabric and detailing. The pitched roof is covered in natural slate with roll-moulded black clay ridge tiles, and features exposed timber rafter feet. The redbrick chimneystack is shared with the adjoining properties and has terracotta pots. The front elevation is two bays wide, with two large wall-head dormers featuring timber bargeboards and windows. Window openings throughout are square-headed with chamfered brick surrounds, masonry sills, and timber frames. The windows themselves are latticed iron bipartite casement windows, now rare. The central door opening has a chamfered brick surround and retains its original vertically-sheeted timber door. The east elevation is abutted by No. 3, and the west elevation by No. 1. The rear elevation has a central catslide roof with replacement timber casement windows. Although the interior appears to have been altered, the exterior preserves considerable original character. Rainwater goods are modern plastic replacements.
The Ordnance Survey map of 1834 shows the cottage as an oblong structure at the entrance to the cul-de-sac. The Ordnance Survey Memoirs record that Purdysburn Village was built sometime before the 1830s, though no documentary evidence of its origin has been found. The estate was occupied by the Batt family from 1812, with Robert Batt being the last occupant of Purdysburn House before its sale around 1860, after which these houses became private residences.
Historical records show the property changing hands through several tenants. In 1861, Samuel Johnston rented the house from Robert Batt, with the property valued at £1 15s. Samuel Thompson occupied it until 1883, followed by G. Walker. By 1896, William Gregg, a weaver, took residence until 1901. Later occupants included William Moreland and Alexander Boyd, both labourers, and James Graves from 1912 to 1929. By 1935, James Grimes rented the house at 2/9 weekly rent, and the property's valuation had increased to £4 10s, with the valuer recording dimensions of 25 feet by 16.5 feet. The final recorded occupant was Richard Skates, also a weaver, who had previously lived at No. 1.
This house has historic interest and significant group value with its two adjoining cottages, all three forming part of the original Purdysburn estate settlement.
