Description

Tunny Bridge is a formal single-span stone-built bridge of approximately 1840, located on Feumore Road roughly 3.5 kilometres north-west of the hamlet of Lower Ballinderry. It carries a road over the Tunny Cut, a drainage channel extending from Portmore Lough to Lough Neagh.

The bridge is constructed in coursed squared rock-faced rubble with a relatively broad segmental arch featuring rock-faced voussoirs and a dressed string course above. The parapets have square end piers projecting on the outer sides, topped with dressed stone coping. Several perfectly square blocks on the inner sides of the parapets appear to have been intended as panels for datestones or armorials, though none are currently visible.

The Tunny Cut was probably constructed following engineer Thomas Townsend's 1813 report to the Parliamentary Commissioners, which recommended drainage of the bogs and inundated grounds around Lough Neagh. The cut itself is shown on the 1832 Ordnance Survey map alongside Tunny Bridge. The present bridge may be slightly later than the original cut, however, its formality and the relative sophistication of its segmental arch suggesting it may be a rebuild of circa 1840. The name 'Tunny', from the Irish for quaking bog or quagmire, has been applied to this vicinity since at least the mid-17th century.

The bridge remains a fine example of a stone bridge in a rural setting, retaining much authenticity with little or no apparent alterations. It is of industrial archaeological interest.
