Description
No. 14 Railway Street, Lisburn, is a symmetrical mid-terrace three-storey brick townhouse built around 1855. The building forms part of a terrace of former Georgian townhouses lining the east side of Railway Street, which was extended after the 1830s.
The building is rectangular on plan, facing west onto Railway Street. The roof is concealed behind a rendered parapet wall with masonry coping, and redbrick chimneystacks with clay pots sit at either gable end. A replacement metal hopper and downpipe break through the parapet wall. The external walls are laid in Flemish bond redbrick with a render plinth course. The windows have square-headed openings with rendered reveals and painted masonry sills, fitted with replacement uPVC windows. The front elevation is symmetrical and three windows wide, with a central round-headed door opening containing replacement double-leaf timber panelled doors and a semi-circular fanlight. Two concrete steps with an embedded wrought-iron bootscraper lead from the door to the street. The north and south side elevations are abutted by adjoining buildings (Nos. 16 and 12 respectively). The rear elevation is painted brick, three storeys high, and abutted by an iron-sheeted full-height projection with replacement timber casement windows.
The building does not appear on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833 or on Thomas Pattison's illustrated map of the town centre from around 1830, indicating construction after 1830. It first appears on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1857. However, No. 14 was constructed at a higher level than the adjoining nos. 16 to 22 Railway Street, suggesting it may have been built either earlier or later than the rest of the terrace.
Historical records indicate that No. 14 may have been the residence of Hugh Seeds, who owned considerable property in Lisburn. In 1910, the building was occupied by Dr. George Alexander Waring, who died that same year. The 1911 Census Building Return describes the property as a first-class private dwelling comprising 15 rooms, with a stable and coach house as its sole outoffices. His widow, Sarah Leeds Waring, was left to raise their four infant children with the help of a nurse and domestic servant.
In 1969, architectural historian Charles Brett described the terrace (nos. 4 to 22) as "good three-storey Georgian brick or stucco houses with glazing bars intact...the backs of [which] are of stone". While No. 14 maintains its original Georgian character on the exterior, the interior has been extensively renovated. The building now operates as a dental practice. The building is located within a conservation area but is not considered of sufficient quality for listing, owing to alterations to the interior, windows, and parapet that have diminished its character.
