Description
Mid terrace three-storey redbrick house, built around 1850. The building forms part of a group of four similar former townhouses lining the east side of Railway Street in Lisburn. It does not meet listing criteria due to extensive alterations to the ground floor and shopfront, which extend into the adjoining building and detract from the integrity of the house and the group value of the terrace.
The building is rectangular on plan with a rear return. The pitched natural slate roof is topped with black clay ridge tiles and features a pair of shared brick chimneystacks with clay pots. Plastic guttering on steel brackets runs beneath the dentiled brick eaves course, with a cast-iron downpipe. The redbrick walling is laid in Flemish bond with cement pointing, rendered at ground floor level. The rear elevation is constructed of rubblestone walling.
The front elevation is two windows wide. Square-headed window openings have painted masonry sills and original six-over-six timber sash windows to the upper storeys, though the first floor windows are late twentieth-century replacements. A late twentieth-century shopfront extends across the ground floor and into the adjoining building at No. 22. The north side elevation is abutted by No. 22, and the south side is abutted by No. 18. The rear elevation has rubblestone walling with redbrick linings to all openings, and retains original six-over-six timber sash windows. It is abutted by a gable-ended two-storey rendered return. A tall rendered wall encloses a small rear yard.
The building first appears on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1857, though it does not appear on a detailed map of the town centre from around 1830, suggesting construction around 1850. Originally built as a private dwelling, it was occupied in 1901 by Frances Isabella Wilson, a 50-year-old Unitarian spinster. The 1911 Census described it as a second-class dwelling of eight rooms with a slated roof. A turf house is recorded in the outoffice return for 1901 but not 1911. Wilson's will, dated September 1911, left effects of £2,303 5 shillings and 8 pence to the Reverend John Alexander Kelly and Mr. George Alexander Duncan. The terrace was described by architectural historian Charles E. B. Brett as comprising "good three-storey Georgian brick or stucco houses with glazing bars intact ... the backs of [which] are of stone". The original Georgian glazed windows and layout have been retained, though a modern shopfront was added to the ground floors of Nos. 20 and 22 within the last 30 years, recently converted for use as a hairdresser's salon. The building is located within a conservation area.
