Description

No. 18 Railway Street is a mid-terrace three-storey redbrick former house built around 1850. It forms part of a group of four similar houses lining the east side of Railway Street in Lisburn, and is the only one in the group to retain its original ground floor composition and doorcase. Although it preserves some of its original late Georgian and early Victorian character, it is not considered to meet the criteria for listing. The insertion of modern shopfronts to neighbouring former houses has degraded the character and group value of the terrace.

The building is rectangular on plan with a rear return. It has a pitched natural slate roof with black clay ridge tiles and a pair of shared brick chimneystacks with clay pots. Cast-iron guttering on iron brackets sits beneath a dentiled brick eaves course, with a cast-iron downpipe. The redbrick walling is laid in Flemish bond with cement pointing and a rendered plinth course. The rear elevation has rubblestone walling.

The front elevation is two windows wide. Square-headed window openings contain original 6/6 timber sash windows with painted masonry sills and some cylinder glass. The round-headed door opening has a coved render surround and timber doorcase. The original timber door has two flat panels flanked by slender panelled pilasters on masonry plinth blocks. A pair of scrolled console brackets support a stepped lintel cornice with a plain fanlight above. The door opens onto two concrete steps to the street. The north side elevation is abutted by adjoining house No. 20, while the south side is abutted by No. 16.

The rear elevation has rubblestone walling and redbrick linings to all openings, with a gable-ended two-storey rendered return. Original 6/6 timber sash windows survive to the rear elevation, though the return has replacement multi-pane timber casement windows. A tall rendered wall encloses a small rear yard.

The building first appears on the second edition Ordnance Survey map for Lisburn around 1857. It does not appear on a detailed map of the town centre by Thomas Pattison around 1830, suggesting construction sometime after that date. The building was occupied in 1901 by Thomas M. Wilson, the Town Clerk of Lisburn. By 1910 it had passed to Ernest T. S. Wilson, a local solicitor, who occupied it in 1911 with his wife Florence. The 1911 Census building return described No. 18 as a first-class dwelling consisting of 12 rooms with a slated roof.

The architectural historian Brett described the houses on this terrace (Nos. 4 to 24) as "good three-storey Georgian brick or stucco houses with glazing bars intact ... the backs of [which] are of stone." The original features and layout of No. 18 have been well preserved; the Georgian-style glazing still survives, as does the original Edwardian doorcase and fanlight window—the only example along the terrace to preserve this feature.

Like many buildings along this terrace, the shopfront and upper floors have been converted into business premises. The building is currently occupied by a company of solicitors and is situated within a conservation area.
