Description
This Great Northern Railway (Ireland) signal box, dating from around 1910, is notable for its architectural style and simple floor arrangement. Constructed as a timber cabin set upon a substantial brick base, it differs from the more common two-storey signal box designs. It's situated at the western end of the Lisburn Railway Station complex, providing a view of trains entering and leaving the station on both the main and secondary lines. The building retains interest as an early 20th century railway structure and possesses group value alongside the other significant buildings and structures within the station complex (reference numbers HB19/15/003A and HB19/15/003C).
The signal box is positioned at the western end of the island platform, aligned east-west. Originally, the upper floor housed signal levers while the lower section contained linking rods and wires. The roof is covered in natural slate, with projecting plain bargeboards, boxed eaves, and half-round metal rainwater goods. The upper section is a horizontally-sheeted timber frame with timber-framed windows to all sides, each with timber cills. An external metal ladder leads to a semi-glazed timber entrance door on the eastern gable. Small returns with catslide roofs project from the western end of the south elevation and the eastern end of the north elevation. The brick base is painted. Despite the removal of the signal control equipment, the upper floor is now used as a rest room for Translink’s permanent way staff.
The signal box first appeared on an Ordnance Survey map from 1920, replacing an earlier cabin located at the western end of the main platform. This confirms its construction within the first two decades of the 1900s by the Great Northern Railway (Ireland). With the introduction of electronic signalling, the box became obsolete.
