Description

A three-bay, three-storey end-terrace red brick commercial premises built around 1900, located on the south side of Bachelors Walk in the centre of Lisburn. The building is rectangular on plan with a flat-roof single-storey return and lean-to to the rear.

The pitched natural slate roof is finished with terracotta ridge tiles and features a conjoined red brick chimneystack with yellow brick plinth and clay pots. Cast-iron ogee rainwater goods run along decorative yellow brick and edged brick eaves coursing. The walling is English garden wall-bonded red brick with yellow brick string courses at springing and sill level.

The principal elevation, facing north, is three windows wide across the upper floors. Windows are 2/2 segmental-headed timber-framed sliding sash with margin panes and horns, fitted with yellow brick lintels and projecting masonry sills. The ground floor has an off-centre entrance to the right, two windows to the left and one to the right, all finished with replacement timber doors and plain fanlights in deep reveals with yellow brick lintels and black brick keyblocks.

The east elevation is cement rendered and blank. The south elevation is irregularly arranged with windows to the second floor left and right, a diminutive window at centre landing level (now occupied by a modern uPVC fire-escape door), a first-floor window arrangement, and a large replacement timber casement window to the ground floor right. The west elevation is abutted by the adjoining building.

The interior has been completely refurbished with little or no historic fabric remaining, and the original floor-plan has been altered. An off-centre entrance indicates modification to the ground floor.

The building stands corner-sited at the junction of Bachelors Walk and Graham Gardens. A car park to the rear is enclosed by a rough-cast rendered wall and timber fencing on a rubble stone plinth to the south, with timber entrance gates and a timber-sheeted pedestrian gate.

This house formed part of a terrace on the south side of Bachelors Walk shown on the third edition Ordnance Survey map of around 1900. Several houses in the row were demolished after 1900 to allow entry to the newly laid-out Graham Gardens; number 19 is the last remaining property of the original terrace.

In the 1920s, the building (then numbered 19A Bachelors Walk) was the lodging of Miss Maud J. G. Hunter, a harpist and piano teacher. Miss Hunter was owner of an Egan harp, now in the possession of Lisburn Museum, manufactured by the eminent harp maker John Egan in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. She gave concerts in Belfast and taught piano at her lodgings even after losing her sight in later life. She was central to musical production at Seymour Street Methodist Church and served as organist there for some thirty years, continuing after a new organ was installed in 1920.
