Description
A charming neo-Gothic summerhouse, built between 1880 and 1899, is delightfully situated overlooking Turf House bay within Crom Estate, Co. Fermanagh. It retains much of its original character and demonstrates minor late 19th-century additions to the estate. The design was likely adapted from a proposal by Sir Edward Lovett Pearce for a hexagonal island gazebo. The summerhouse occupies the site of a former schoolhouse that appeared on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map.
The building is hexagonal, with a leaded roof featuring a finial set behind a blocking course parapet. The rear face has a rendered and painted chimney. The walls are wet dashed and painted, incorporating a stone coping to the parapet and sandstone cills to the windows. All windows are set within lancet-headed openings and contain pairs of timber 2x4 casements with a 2x3 transom above. The front (northeast) face features a pair of glazed timber doors with a transom. All remaining walls feature a window, while the rear (southwest) face is blank.
The summerhouse was erected in 1880 by Lady Florence, Mary Crichton, wife of the 4th Earl of Erne. It is considered to have significant architectural interest due to its style, proportions, ornamentation, plan form, quality, survival, setting, and group value. It also holds historical interest due to the authorship of Sir Edward Lovett Pearce.
