Old Boat House, Crom Castle Estate, Newtownbutler, Co. Fermanagh, BT92 8AP

The remains of the Old Boat House reflect the early development of the Crom Castle Estate, dating to the late 1700s and again in the late 1800s. It contributes to the landscape and is part of the estate's building stock. The ruins are located to the southeast of the Summer House. The walls are constructed of rubble stone, brought to courses, and feature a large semi-elliptical opening with finely dressed stone facing the lake (to the southeast). Although not depicted on Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps until 1907, the boat house was likely built in the late 18th century by John Crichton, first Earl of Erne. He built it around the same time as Inisherk Lodge and when he began spending summer months on Inisherk Island, following the destruction of the original castle in 1764. Later in the 1800s, the remains were probably consolidated into a mock-folly landscape feature, possibly after the lake level was lowered in the 1880s. The building is currently derelict.
