Description
The White Bridge carries a single-lane track over a branch of Upper Lough Erne to Inisherk Island, within the grounds of Crom Estate. The main structural element is a concrete bridge dating from 1961, constructed of 18 pre-fabricated reinforced-concrete deck slabs, each 4.27m long by 3.15m wide by 24cm thick. These rest on cross transoms supported by pairs of concrete piles just above the waterline. The bridge’s total length is 76.8m (252ft), with a carriageway width of 2.75m (9ft), bordered by low concrete parapets 13cm wide and 12cm high incorporating rainwater channels. A metal cattle grid is located at the southern end.
The bridge features a balustrade of identical cast-iron segments, bolted to the concrete parapets with metal brackets. A timber handrail, measuring 14.0 x 9.5cm in cross-section, runs along the top of the balustrade. Each six-sided cast-iron segment is 1.07m long by 91cm high and comprises two diagonally-braced parallelograms. The metalwork itself is 7.0cm x 1.6cm in cross-section and painted white.
A previous wooden bridge, erected around 1836 to access a walled garden on Inisherk Island, is documented on a map from 1834 noting an "intended road and bridge" at this location. The wooden bridge, measuring 105m long and 2m high, was rebuilt three times, in 1862 (likely when the current cast-iron balustrade was added), 1914-1918, and 1939. The present concrete structure replaced the earlier bridge, which was taller and longer; this change is attributable to a lowering of the lake’s water level in the 1880s. The balustrade was restored in 1987 by the National Trust. The bridge possesses qualities of industrial archaeological interest.
