Description
This is a single-story, three-bay gardener’s cottage located next to the walled garden on Inisherk Island, within the Crom Estate. It was built between 1800 and 1819 and retains a strong historical connection to the former operation of the gardens, contributing to the estate’s building stock.
The cottage is aligned north-south at the northwest corner of the walled garden. It has a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with two brick chimneys – one on the north gable and one between the south and central bays. Half-round metal rainwater goods are also present. The walls are finished with a wet-dash render, and the windows are 2/2 sliding sash windows with sandstone sills, unless otherwise noted. The principal (east) elevation faces the gardens.
A gabled windbreak porch is located at the left end of the north bay. The porch has a pitched natural slate roof with fretted bargeboards and a pointed finial. The original doorway has been infilled and replaced with a window, with a further window to its right and a smaller, diminished window to its left. The south gable is partly abutted by a small lean-to, which contains an external toilet. The west elevation features an entrance porch with a flat concrete roof at the right end of the central bay, featuring a T&G sheeted door. A small casement window is on the right cheek of the porch, while the left cheek is blank. A window is to the left of the porch, and each remaining bay contains a window. An infilled doorway is located at the right end of the south bay. The north gable is completely abutted by a single-story extension with a monopitched corrugated metal roof. This extension has a metal-framed window and a timber-sheeted door on its north face, with a door on its west cheek and a window on its east cheek.
The gardener’s cottage is situated at the northwest corner of the walled garden (listed separately), and is accessed via a laneway running the length of the north wall, passing through an ornate pair of wrought iron gates. It was originally built in the late 1800s to house gardening staff. In the 1950s, the cottage was converted into a dwelling for Miss Moran, who occupied it until 1989. The cottage has been vacant since then. It holds local historical interest and possesses architectural merit relating to its style, proportions, ornamentation, plan form, setting, and group value.
