Description
A pair of single storey buildings at Ballaghgee, each of two bays, dating to the early 19th century (around 1820-1839). The building faces north-west overlooking a secondary road that travels north-easterly from the Belleek to Pettigoe road, approximately three miles from Belleek.
The right-hand (south-west) section is a direct entry dwelling with a thatched roof. The left-hand (north-east) section, originally a byre, now has a corrugated iron roof and no entrance. The thatched roof is contained within concrete parapet gables, each rising to a low chimneystack with narrow concrete copings. The right-hand stack includes a spark arrester. Three rows of scallops are exposed at the ridge with one row at the eaves. The retention of the thatched covering and the traditional form of the early roof structure in the thatched portion is of considerable interest, and the layout remains discernible.
The entrance to the thatched house is served by a modern timber sheeted door, flanked on either side by a vertically sliding margined paned window without sash stops and with splayed sills of traditional depths. A similar window remains in the rear wall of the living room. The kitchen extension at the rear has a pitched roof covered with cement fibre slates, plastic rainwater goods, and modern windows.
The corrugated iron-roofed section terminates in a concrete parapet gable at the north-east end. At the front are three plastic-framed margined paned windows; the central window opens fully to provide an escape function, whilst those on either side are top hung. The sills are narrow. Two similar windows are located at the rear.
Historical records show a smaller building on this site in the Ordnance Survey map of 1834/35, which appears in extended form on the revised map of 1859. The occupant in 1859 was recorded as Daniel McGarrigal, with John C. Bloomfield as the immediate lessor and a rateable value of 10 shillings. The original building comprised a dwelling (represented by the present thatched section) and a byre (now the corrugated iron-roofed part). Over time, the byre was adapted for habitation with a centrally placed front door flanked by windows on either side. It has since been incorporated into the existing house, losing its entrance door and having plastic-framed windows inserted in the process.
