Description

A telephone kiosk designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935, this is a pre-1953 K6-model kiosk of cast-iron construction, painted red. The kiosk is square-plan and freestanding, with glazing to three elevations and a solid panel to the fourth (south). It sits next to 101 Church Hill Road, Derrygonnelly, set back from the road and positioned above pavement level on an elevated plinth.

The kiosk was constructed during the 1940s to 1950s period and retains the Tudor Crown cypher, indicating installation between 1936 and 1953. The design features single-pane windows with glazing bars. Notably, the kiosk retains an unusually high proportion of its original glass—greater than 75%—with less than 25% of glass replaced with Perspex. The signage reading "TELEPHONE" is faded on the south and west elevations. The door handle is an original-design replacement. One pane is missing from the west elevation. The roof is cast-iron with no rainwater goods. Telephone equipment has been removed and replaced with fluorescent lighting.

The K6 was designed to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V in 1935. Its compact size and cast-iron construction with a teak door made it easily mass-produced and distributed throughout the UK from 1936. Approximately 60,000 K6 kiosks were placed around the country, making it the most successful and populous model introduced. Some 8,000 were installed as part of the "Jubilee Concession," which allowed towns and villages with a post office to apply for a kiosk. A further 1,000 were installed under the "Tercentenary Concession" celebrating the Post Office's 300th anniversary. After 1949, the "Rural Allocation scheme" placed kiosks in out-of-town areas upon rural authority recommendation. Following Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953, the Tudor crown motif was replaced with the St. Edward's crown on new models. The K6 continued in production until 1968.

Historical records indicate that a telephone call box occupied this site by the time of the 1965–66 Ordnance Survey map, positioned next to the local post office, which had occupied the site since the late 1700s. The kiosk's presence makes an important contribution to the historic setting of the village, though it is now largely obscured from southern views by the extension of number 101 Church Hill Road toward the street.
