Description
The north gate to Castletown Demesne, near Enniskillen, consists of a pair of substantial wrought-iron carriage gates and a smaller matching pedestrian gate. Dating to around 1860, the gates served the now-disused driveway leading to Castletown House. The carriage gates feature plain dog-bars, with a reduced number of main bars, each topped with spearhead finials and interspersed with spearheads. A decorative wrought-iron clasping bar adorns the gates, which are similar in design to those at the flower garden of Castletown House (HB12/11/77A), but without the quatrefoil frieze. The gates are supported by one-piece masonry posts with swept copings. The pedestrian gate is smaller and has plain spike finials, with its post topped by a plain tapered cap. A gate lodge originally stood adjacent to the gates, but has since been demolished.
Castletown Demesne itself is part of the Monea estate, which includes Monea Castle, a plantation structure originating from 1619 and designated as a scheduled monument (SM FER 191-61) due to its historical significance and intact condition. Monea Cottage replaced the castle after a fire in 1750. The estate passed to John Dawson Brien in 1856, who built the current house and lodges around 1860; he held the position of High Sheriff and Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Fermanagh in 1869. Historic Ordnance Survey maps show the demesne, the lodge and the driveway to the north. The northern boundary of the demesne is surrounded by a tree-lined avenue. The style, proportion, ornamentation, and setting of the gates contribute to their architectural and group value, and reflect local historical interest.
