Description

Free-standing lime kiln built around 1860, located on the east side of Bradan Road near Drumquin. The kiln is rectangular in plan and partially recessed within a grassy bank, with a grass-covered roof featuring a large circular hole at its centre for loading limestone and fuel and allowing exhaust fumes to escape; the hole is now covered with a steel grid. The walls are constructed of squared stone at the base, with coursed rubble work above and rubble coping to the top.

The principal elevation faces west and contains a large square-headed opening, now supported by modern steel beams and steel plates. The reveals of this opening curve towards the rear, and within it the wall is corbelled out from a square-headed draw hole at the base, which forms the outer wall of the furnace; the corbelling is supported at each step by modern steel beams. The north and south elevations are partially recessed within the bank.

The kiln has a roadside location with access from the south to a yard at upper level, and is bounded on each side by wire fencing. The structure remains largely unchanged and its function can be clearly seen. The opening in the principal elevation allowed access to the lime produced from the reinforced circular furnace enclosed within the structure, while the roadside location aided transport. Although no longer in use, the kiln represents the development of the quarry industry in the area and is a notable example of its type, having more substantial construction than is commonly seen.

Historical records show that a limestone quarry was noted in the Townland Valuations of 1828 to 1840, with a quarry captioned on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833 located to the north of the present kiln. However, no kiln is shown on the maps until the third edition of 1905, which shows it without a caption. The fourth edition map of 1939 to 1951 captions the kiln as 'Lk' and shows several others nearby. The kiln's dating to the mid- to late-nineteenth century is indicated by its stonework detailing, the reinforcement of the furnace, and its scale, positioned close to the stone quarry.
