Bridge across Sloughan Glen, Sloughan Road, Omagh, Co. Tyrone, BT78 4QN

A single-span road bridge, constructed around 1820, carries Sloughan Road over The Black Water at Sloughan Glen. The bridge was built to meet the challenges of this deep glen and demonstrates engineering merit. Newer repairs and the replacement of the parapets have reduced the structure’s original interest; it represents a relatively common bridge type.

The abutments and spandrels are constructed from squared-and-snecked rockfaced granite, while the replacement parapets are roughcast concrete. Square drainage channels are located to the north and south sides. The bridge features a single segmental-headed arch built with dressed rockfaced voussoirs, and the arch soffit is of squared-and-snecked granite. The carriageway is approximately 5 metres wide, carrying the road across the glen above the river. The riverbank is steep, bordered on all sides by a timber fence. To the northwest, a pedestrian path provides access to a waterfall.

The bridge is visible on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833, crossing Sloughan Glen, an area historically surrounded by both active and ruined corn kilns. It was uncaptioned on the first four editions of the Ordnance Survey maps.

The bridge’s extent is not listed, and it currently serves its original function as a road bridge.
