Description
This is a double-span road bridge constructed around 1850, carrying Tirmurty Road over the Cappagh Burn. The bridge is built of random rubble sandstone with dressed voussoirs and is largely intact, representing a good example of its type in original condition. The bridge is oriented north-south and features uncoursed random rubble piers and spandrels. It includes segmental coping on the rubble parapet walls; the east parapet wall terminates at the junction with a roughcast and brick boundary wall, while the west parapet wall at the north incorporates a post box. Two semi-circular-headed arches are present, with a lime-rendered rubble stone soffit. The carriageway is approximately 5 metres wide. Access to the west side of the bridge is from the north via a replacement cast-iron gate and rubble steps leading to the river. A rubble walling enclosing a walkway from the river edge abuts the west retaining wall.
Historical maps indicate that in 1834, the road approached and left the river without a bridge. The 1854 Ordnance Survey map shows the current bridge, along with nearby 'Corn Mill' and 'Flax Mill' buildings. The bridge's construction date is estimated between 1840 and 1859. The listing includes the bridge and the integrated post box. The area is designated as Castleroddy Glebe. The bridge exhibits architectural interest in its style, proportion, plan form, and structural system and holds local historical significance.
