Description

Dunmullan Road, Omagh

A detached three-bay single-storey direct-entry rubble stone former thatched house, built circa 1820, forms part of an informal group of four vernacular structures on this site. The main house is rectangular on plan, facing east, with a pair of stone structures to the north and a further stone structure to the west of the road.

The main house has a pitched corrugated iron roof with cement verges and a pair of brick chimneystacks. Steel rainwater goods are present. The front east elevation is rendered in cement and is four windows wide, featuring largely rebuilt walling with square-headed window openings and steel casement windows. A square-headed door opening contains a vertically-sheeted timber door. The south gable has a single attic window opening with a brick chimneystack rising from the gable. The west rear elevation has a large out-shot to the southern half, containing two small window openings with brick linings and timber lintels plus a steel casement window. The northern half has a further pair of small square-headed window openings and a single 2/2 timber sliding sash window. The north gable is blank.

A three-bay single-storey former dwelling is positioned on the west side of the road. It has a pitched natural slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods, rubble stone walling with squared quoins, and arrow slits to the east gable. All window and door openings have redbrick linings. Timber pivot windows and a vertically-sheeted timber door are present.

A gable-fronted rubble stone former carriage house stands to the north, with a pitched corrugated iron roof and a large gothic opening to the east gable. The jambs to this arched opening are rounded in the form of a pair of piers with voussoired stones to the arch. Squared stone quoins are present to the rear west gable and a small round opening is visible on the south elevation.

A single-storey rubble stone outbuilding stands to the east of the carriage house and main house, facing west. It has a pitched corrugated iron roof and three square-headed openings with vertically-sheeted timber doors.

The building appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833, together with outbuildings to south and north. It is not identifiable in the Townland Valuation (1828–40). Griffith's Valuation (1856–64) records it at a value of £1, leased by James McClintock from the Reverend James Byrne. By 1877, John Hutcheson became the owner in fee. In 1933, the building remained occupied by the Hutcheson family, and valuers noted that the house had been converted to agricultural office use.

The group of structures contains nineteenth-century features but has been compromised by alteration to openings and loss of original fabric. This collection is typical of formerly common rural settlement patterns in the region. The structures are recorded only and are not considered to be of special architectural or historic interest.
