Description
A detached three-bay two-storey former parochial house built around 1915, located on the south side of Knockmoyle Road near Omagh. The house was built for St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Knockmoyle, and is first documented on the 1936 Ordnance Survey map as 'Parochial House'. Valuation records show the property was valued at £13 in 1916, when it was occupied by Reverend John McKenna, who held it in fee as 'house, office and land'.
The building is rectangular on plan with a two-storey return to the east and a single-storey lean-to sunroom added to the north around 1980. The roof is natural slate with terracotta ridge tiles over timber jettied eaves supported on timber brackets seated on stone corbels, finished with red brick corbelled chimneys.
The walls are roughcast with painted brick quoins over a rendered plinth and smooth rendered banded cornice to the return. The principal western elevation is symmetrically fronted with left and right canted bays, each containing paired windows with margin lights to both floors. The windows are square-headed timber-framed 1/1 sliding sashes with painted brick voussoirs and painted masonry sills. The central bay contains a square-headed timber-panelled entrance door flanked by stained glass sidelights, set within a painted brick surround and surmounted by a plain frieze and triangular pediment. A single window with sidelights sits above at first-floor level. The north elevation has two first-floor windows and is abutted at ground level by the lean-to uPVC sunroom with slated roof. The east return elevation contains single windows to each floor, while the exposed section of the east elevation shows two windows at each floor to the left and single windows at each floor to the right. The return's east elevation has a single ground-floor window; its north elevation displays a ground-floor window (now blocked) with an oculus above in a smooth rendered surround at first-floor level; its south elevation has a replacement square-headed uPVC door at ground floor with a single window at first floor. The south elevation contains two ground-floor windows to the left and first-floor windows to the right and left.
The house exhibits many original and idiosyncratic Edwardian features, including ornate paired windows with margin lights, distinctive brick detailing, and timber jettying to the eaves. Built in a robust, unorthodox style, it is architecturally notable for its distinctive character and proportions.
The property is set within mature gardens with a modern garage to the south-east, bounded on all sides by hedging. Access from the road is through a pair of square rendered pillars with panelled detailing surmounted by pyramidal coping. The building retains much of its original character and forms a notable element within the local area.
