Description

Telephone Kiosk, The Diamond, Kilrea

A square-plan, freestanding K6 telephone kiosk of cast-iron construction, painted red, with glazing to three elevations. The kiosk was designed by the prominent architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and erected during the mid-20th century, replacing an earlier telephone box that stood on this site from at least 1925.

The symmetrical structure stands on a concrete base and features a shallow, cast-iron domed roof carried on moulded pediments. Panels beneath the roof display glazed, opaque rectangular signs reading 'Telephone' and are surmounted by a raised crown moulding on each of the four elevations. All sides are glazed with 8 by 3 panes of plain glass except for the west elevation, which has a blank back panel and foundry plate beneath. A timber and painted door to the south elevation bears a metal door handle and a 'Pull' sign; some glass panes are missing. The interior contains modernised telephone equipment, and the kiosk is in a fairly good state of repair.

The K6 design was developed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 as a standardised model introduced in 1936 by the General Post Office in commemoration of the Silver Jubilee of King George V. Constructed in compact cast-iron form for easy mass-production, the design evolved from Scott's earlier K2 and K3 kiosk models. The K6 became the most successful and populous type of telephone kiosk distributed throughout the UK, with over 10,000 manufactured. It remains a characteristic feature of the British streetscape, though many have been replaced with modern kiosks in recent decades. This example continues to function in its original role and represents a relatively rare surviving example in Northern Ireland.

The kiosk occupies a prominent site at the south-east corner of The Diamond, the central square of Kilrea, which was laid out during the mid-18th century. It stands within the historic core of the town and has direct visual interaction with adjacent listed structures, including the war memorial at the centre of the square and the former hotel to the north-east corner. Shops are situated to the south and east, with a main traffic junction directly to the north-west. In conjunction with these nearby listed buildings, the kiosk contributes to the historic fabric and visual character of The Diamond.
