Description

Carrick Corn Mill is a substantially existing two-storey, six-bay former mill building dating from approximately 1800 to 1819. It is located at Carrick Mills, Terrydremont North, near Limavady, and bears structural similarities to another mill building, HB02/08/033A. The building is of interest as a piece of industrial archaeology and a historical remnant of a once very important local industry, reflecting its evolution from bleach mill, to flax mill, and finally to corn mill.

The roof is corrugated asbestos cement, with cast iron rainwater goods. The north wall is of rubble stone, rising to eaves level at the corners, with five brick piers equally spaced at the first floor level. The space between these piers was partly bricked in, but retains five window openings. The west gable, adjacent to the river, is also of stone with a bricked-up door and six openings at first floor level, as well as a smaller opening in the apex. Remains of steel supports for an external mill wheel are visible at the base of the wall, although the trough has been filled in to provide a route for a country park path. The south wall is of similar construction to the north, with more brick repairs. It features two louvred openings and a large door with an exterior sliding rail.

The building is shown on the 1830 Ordnance Survey map. Historical records indicate it was part of a bleach mill before conversion to a flax mill around 1830. By 1848, it was marked on Ordnance Survey maps as a corn mill. A now-demolished building to the north was described as a corn kiln. The mill operated as such until the early years of the 21st century. The building currently functions as farm buildings and is owned by central government.
