Description
This is a well-restored and maintained bleach green watch tower, located picturesquely near the River Roe within Roe Valley Country Park, Largy, Limavady. Constructed between 1760 and 1779 as part of a bleach green opened in 1766 by Lesley Alexander and closed in 1831, it represents a rare survival linked to the once-important linen industry of the River Roe.
The small, stone-built tower, approximately two metres in diameter and 2.2 metres high to the roof edge, was originally intended to supervise the bleaching linen laid out on the green, protecting it from animals and thieves. It is one of a pair, the other located to the south (HB02.03.014B). The tower is built of larger, smooth-edged stones, likely sourced from the nearby river. It features a single entrance slot, 500mm wide, facing the former mill buildings (HB02/03/013), and a small, 500mm square window on the north-western side, symmetrical with the door to the south-west. The tower is designed to accommodate just one person. The roof is a distinctive corbelled dome of sharp-edged field stone in a flattened segmental shape.
The tower was rebuilt from its foundations in the mid-1970s by the Country Park. It is located amongst mature trees on the riverbank, providing a picturesque setting. The appearance of the bleach green today is misleading; prior to the 1980s, two millraces crossed the field, one dating from the time of the towers' construction. The tower is of vernacular style and holds industrial archaeological interest. It is indicated on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1831.
