Description

The Corn Store is a two-story, three-bay brick building situated at the northern end of Largy Bridge (HB02/03/009). Constructed between 1820 and 1839, it is of local historical interest due to its association with the industrial use of the River Roe. The building has a natural slate roof and cast iron rainwater goods. A central bay features a double flush door. Above the door is 600mm of board-marked concrete with a slatted door at eaves level on the first floor. Ground floor windows flank the door, each being a four-pane sash window with timber shutters and segmental brick relieving arches. First floor openings align with these windows, although they are now closed with slatted timber. A pulley projects from the roof above the central bay. To the east are two square openings at the first floor, also closed with slatted timber. The rear elevation features three similarly sized openings abutting the eaves, also closed with slatted timber. A centrally placed flush double door opens onto a timber staircase. A small window with a timber shutter is located on the east side, while evidence of a larger blocked opening is visible on the west. A double door at ground level leads to a basement. The west gable has two blocked openings. Behind the building, a stone-lined elliptical recess formerly used as a tannery is visible.

The building is depicted on an Ordnance Survey map of 1831 and was part of a complex described in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs as comprising a bleach mill with two water wheels, connected to the River Roe by a wooden aqueduct. Associated buildings included an engine house, rub board house, boiling house, two drying lofts, two store houses, a broughan house, and a carpenter's workshop. The store house was likely always used for storage, as the main mill was situated a short distance to the northwest. The building has been renovated by the Department of the Environment in the mid-1980s and is currently used as an office. The site is of industrial archaeological interest.
