Description
This small corn drying shed is part of a larger mill complex situated within Roe Valley Country Park, near Limavady. The building likely dates from the period between 1820 and 1839. It stands adjacent to the former mill race of a corn mill (listed separately as HB02/03/017) within a wooded area at the edge of the former Largy bleach green.
The building is aligned east-west and is constructed of stone. The east elevation features a gable topped by a brick chimney. A recent door sits beneath a stone sill one metre above ground level, with an older brick surround and segmental brick head. Brick quoins are visible in the corners and along the central flue, and the upper wall area above the door is finished with rough harling render. A concrete string course projects outwards where the wall meets the slate roof. The north elevation is at a lower ground level, with a modern door opening framed in brick and a flat, painted stone lintel. A 300mm band of render runs along the eaves. A lean-to shed with a corrugated metal roof abuts the western gable, featuring a single high-level opening and a door on the south side. The north elevation is partly obscured by undergrowth.
Historically, the shed reputedly served as a location for drying corn seeds before processing at the nearby corn mill. The building is visible on the 1830 Ordnance Survey map, though not specifically labelled, and remained identifiable on subsequent maps, suggesting continued use with a roof. Following the decline of the linen industry in the valley, it was likely used for general farm storage. It is occasionally referred to as a bothy and may have served as a shelter for farm labourers with a fire. Currently, Roe Valley Country Park uses the building for storage of gardening equipment, following recent renovations. The building is recognized as having industrial archaeological interest.
