Description
This is a storey and a half house built between 1820 and 1839, located on Ballyquin Road, Limavady, County Londonderry. The house was constructed as the Land Steward’s house for the nearby Dogleap House (HB02/13/007) estate. It’s likely designed by Buchanan & Reid, sharing a similar style with that building. The house is oriented perpendicular to the road and sits within a small garden bounded by high hedges, facing west towards Dogleap House.
The building is primarily red brick with a half-timbered dormer and a central three-bay plan. The front features a central door opening flanked by two smooth-rendered, painted, flat-roofed canted bay windows. Natural slates cover the roof, with red ridge tiles and a brick chimney on the ridge. Exposed ends of rafters run along the eaves, and cast iron rainwater goods are present. A half-timbered dormer, with a central two-pane sash window, aligns with the chimney, situated midway between the front door and the bay to the north. This dormer is supported by two painted corbels projecting at eaves level. The entrance door is topped with a segmental fanlight, divided into rectangular panes with a painted keystone. The glazed door and sidelights are narrower and only align with one jamb, indicating a later alteration. Four windows align with each gable, two on each floor, and a half-timbered attic is supported by two corbels. A narrow, two-storey return projects from the rear, featuring a tall chimney on the back wall and a second chimney near the ridge of the roof. The original sash windows have been replaced with faithful replicas incorporating double glazing. The front door appears to have been reduced in size in the 1960s to accommodate a reorganisation of the staircase. The house first appears on the 1925 Ordnance Survey Map.
