Description

The site includes the ruins of a complex of mills, associated millraces, and a house, all located on Altinure Road, Gallany, near Dungiven. The main mill building appears to have foundations dating from the 18th century. A rectangular mill building, some distance from the main ruin, retains a rusty mill wheel at its western gable and is positioned alongside a vacant two-story house, from which it is detached. The remains of a flume are visible, and a deep, dry millrace runs around the rear of the mill and house, where sluice gates are present. It is not clear how water was originally delivered to the wheel. A 20th-century threshing machine, partially projecting from the building, is located on the first floor, sheltered by a lean-to shed. The millrace continues underground, discharging into the turbine at the lower mill; prior to the turbine's installation, a mill wheel was present. A complex of millraces, now dry, surrounds the buildings.

An 1830 Ordnance Survey map indicates Poston’s corn mill and a millrace complex, and marks an older mill where a different site (HB02/05/021A) is located. The 1830s Ordnance Survey Memoirs mention several mills in the Gallany area, including a grain mill with an undershot water wheel of 13 feet in diameter. Flax mills are also referenced, along with two breast water mills measuring 11 and 11½ feet in diameter. The complex is notable for its industrial archaeological interest, and up until the 1940s, the main mill building housed a turbine that supplied electricity to the surrounding neighbourhood, including Feeny village (see HB02/05/021B). The building was most recently used to thresh corn with a 20th-century threshing machine.
