57 Polly’s Brae Road, Limavady, Co Londonderry, BT49 9LN

The property at 57 Polly’s Brae Road, Limavady, is a picturesque, four-room cottage, likely dating from between 1820 and 1839. It is not depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1832. The cottage demonstrates a quasi-vernacular style, primarily due to the use of corrugated iron roofing and its overall good maintenance. While not representative of traditional local vernacular architecture, it is an attractive building with neat detailing.

The main elevation, three bays wide, features a central projecting porch. There are three-pane modern windows in the gable and a door on the north flank wall, with similar, wider three-pane windows on either side. The windows have concrete cills, and the plinth is smooth, rendered, and painted. The gables include bargeboards, and the eaves feature half-round metal gutters. The roofs are neatly finished in painted corrugated iron, with neat, replastered chimneys on each gable. The walls have been recently roughcast and painted white. A lean-to shed abuts the north gable. The rear elevation features four-pane sliding sash windows on each side of the back return; a modern four-pane window is present in the back return gable, and the back door is located on the north flanking wall. Bargeboards with slight overhangs are also present on the back return gable.

The cottage is in excellent repair and decoration. It is situated within a large garden alongside Polly’s Brae Road. A small stream has been incorporated as a feature within the garden, which is also well maintained. The property was extensively renovated around 1990. An Ordnance Survey map revision from 1903 shows the property.
