Description

This is a two-bay, two-and-a-half-story building with a basement and a three-story rear return, situated on the site of an earlier structure dating from around 1740 to 1759. The building is located in Town Parks, Ballycastle, and sits at the obtuse angle of Ann Street. It makes a positive contribution to the street façade with its traditional, relatively small shopfront, which is likely a recent renovation.

The front of the building presents a shopfront with a left-hand door featuring a glazed upper panel and pilasters on either side, alongside a six-pane shop window also flanked by pilasters. A plaster panel sits below the window cill. Above the window and door is a name fascia with painted lettering and a cornice. Two widely spaced, four-pane double-hung sliding sash windows are positioned above, set within smooth, rendered and painted walls. A half-round gutter, shared with the adjacent number 27, is secured to the fascia. The roof is covered in natural slates and features a single gabled dormer with a double-hung sliding sash window and plain bargeboards, with flashed cheeks. Chimneystacks are located at each end of the roof. The gable wall, rendered roughcast and unpainted, has no openings.

The rear of the building has a double-pitched roof to the three-story back return, with a single door at basement level and a single two-pane double-hung sliding sash window to the first floor. The walls are roughcast rendered and unpainted, with a slated roof.

The building is likely contemporary with HB05/14/009C and was rebuilt entirely or partially towards the end of the 19th century. The windows and dormers show similarities to number 27 Ann Street. The building line to Ann Street has been maintained. A new car park is located to the rear, providing access to McCaughan’s veterinary suppliers. The building is located within a conservation area.
