28 Ann Street, Ballycastle, Co Antrim, BT54 6AD

This is a two-storey building dating probably from the mid-19th century, characteristic of Ann Street in Ballycastle. The building was renovated in the 1990s. It forms part of a terrace and is situated within the Town Parks townland, within a conservation area.

The building is four bays wide and has a shopfront with a side entrance facing Ann Street. The ground floor features a wide shopfront with a pair of glazed doors set slightly off-centre, flanked by display windows, one larger than the other. These are framed by pilasters and topped by a long fascia with bold gold leaf lettering and a cornice with stop ends. Above the shopfront, at the first floor, there are three two-paned windows, with a sign displayed between two of them. A half-round metal gutter is supported by cast iron brackets. The walls are smooth rendered and painted, with rusticated plaster quoins at the first floor only. The roof is natural slate, with a chimneystack at each gable.

The fourth, narrow bay is recessed and contains a four-panelled door with a fanlight above, and a two-paned window positioned under the gutter. This bay has its own slate roof. The building sits slightly back from the upper part of Ann Street, creating a deliberate juxtaposition that adds visual interest to the streetscape.

Historically, the site was formerly occupied by the Northern Bank before 1863, and the narrow bay was previously a gateway. Buildings from number 30 onwards in the terrace were likely erected after 1880, according to Ordnance Survey maps from 1832, 1856, and 1904.
